Abstract. In the conditions of growing world contradictions, a spiritual landmark is needed that could contribute to the unity of
earthlings, at least those who consider themselves Christians. This could be a much-needed and relevant Council of all Christian
Churches. The right to convene a Council of Churches belongs to the hierarchs of the respective Churches, who, as is known, are
mostly religious people. This is the whole problem, because each of them has their own religious attitudes, which can prove to be a
serious obstacle to unanimity, without which not only the agreement on the final documents, but the convening of the Council itself
is impossible. This was clearly demonstrated by the Council of Crete (2016), which was unable to unite even the Orthodox Churches,
let alone the other two main movements of Christianity. And this was natural, because this Council was religious. Thus, this religious
Council failed to achieve the main goal of the long-term pre-Council process – the realization of pan-Orthodoxy – precisely because
the Council was religious. Although this sounds strange, it is nevertheless true. The Council of Christian Churches must be Evangelical.
